What to expect

There is nothing unusal about the hypnotic state or ‘trance’ and we all experience it at least twice a day as we fall asleep or wake up. It’s rather like daydreaming and is that state of mind we are in when we drive somewhere but were so busy thinking about something else that we didn’t notice how we got to our destination.

A session starts with getting into a relaxed state and entering a ‘light trance’ where you still are able to speak. You are fully aware of what is going on around you and are able to respond should something need your urgent attention. As we emabark on the inner journey you are invited to talk and describe what you are aware of. It doesn’t matter if you find it difficult to visualise as the process works extremely well regardless of whether you can ‘see’ vivid images or not.

People usually find it to be a highly enjoyable, interesting and relaxing experience.

How does it work?

Hypnotherapy is a tried and tested technique that has been proven to work with a very wide range of issues and concerns both physical, emotional and mental. It works by interacting with our subconscious minds that are responsible for 95% of human functioning including memory, survival patterns and all our bodily functions. As a technique it dates back to the ancient Egyptians who used the hypnogogic (trance) state in their  healing temples.

Holistic hypnotherapy is a more whole-person approach than ‘traditional’ hypnotherapy and recognises that we are spiritual beings embedded in a living Cosmos and that we can contact and draw on a vast range of resources from the collective unconscious and spiritual dimensions. It is not necessary for you to have any particular beliefs or even believe that this is true – it works despite our beliefs and feelings. 

What if it doesn't work for me?

Holistic hypnosis works in subtle and profound ways. The key thing is not to expect sudden and spectacular transformations (although these can sometimes occur!). More often you will notice yourself doing things easily and naturally that you just never thought to do before. Quite often they are really obvious, it’s just that you didn’t do them! It’s like all the resistance we have to simply doing ‘what it takes’ to accomplish the result we want simply disappears and we just get on with it, almost without noticing. Specific issues that you brought to the session may simply resolve or just cease to feel so important. Perspectives shift and old fears and concerns vanish. There is also an increase in synchronicities and coincidences that bring just the right people and resources at the right time. You might also start noticing a sense of wellbeing and an easing of anxiety and tension and just a very subtle sense that something positive has started flowing, without being able to put your finger on it. An increase in energy and a gentle sense of new possibilities is a very common occurrence.

The most important thing is not to over analyse what is happening (or not happening!) as the conscious mind (ego) can have a tendency to sabotage the change because it wants to protect the status quo. After all it’s what has kept us stuck in the first place.

What if I can't visualise?

It really doesn’t matter if you find it difficult to ‘see’ things in your imagination. Many people can’t. All that’s required is a willingness to go with the flow and say things that simply pop into your head, even if you don’t ‘see’ them. You are not ‘just making it up’! This is precisely how imagination works – it feels like stuff is just coming from nowhere – so it must be ‘made up’. What is actually happening is the subconscious mind is communicating with us through these so called random thoughts and feelings and our job is to take notice of them – something that our modern culture trains us not to do.

There is a distinction between imagination and fantasy. Fantasy tends to be ego-driven wish fulfillment where we consciously choose the thoughts and images e.g. winning the lottery. This is not bad or wrong, but it’s not particularly powerful. The power comes from interacting with our subconscious minds and listening to what is being communicated from deep within.

Will I make a fool of myself?

Stage hypnotists have a lot to answer for! Their version of hypnosis is for pure entertainment and their ‘subjects’ are willing participants. There is no way that hypnosis can override normal healthy instincts although it can help to relax inhibitions. People who start clucking like chickens on stage know exactly what they’re doing and go along for the ride! In a hypnotherapy session you are completely in charge and can come out of trance at any time if you choose to.

What are your payment terms? What if I have to cancel at the last minute?

All sessions are paid for in advance. 48 hours notice is required for a refund. If you have to cancel at the last moment for whatever reason we will attempt to reschedule your session at no extra charge. Refunds are not available if you cancel within 48 hours of the appointment. Please let me know if you will not be able to make a session as planned as soon as you know it’s going to be a problem.
