Synchronicity and Alchemy

Have you ever had one of those moments where everything just seems to fall into place in the most perfect and unexpected way? Like the time you were thinking about a long-lost friend and then they randomly called you out of the blue, or when you were on a tight deadline at work stuck at your wits end and then a colleague or website turns up right on cue with just the right information you need. Or like when I’d been travelling in the Amazon forest in Ecuador (where mobiles don’t work and there’s no internet coverage) and without knowing how, arrived in a tiny village just an hour before the only bus for the week was leaving for city where I needed to be for my next plane. Well, that’s what Carl Jung would call synchronicity.

You might be wondering what synchronicity has to do with alchemy, but they are deeply connected.

Alchemy is an ancient practice that has been around for centuries, and it’s essentially the art (and esoteric science) of transformation. The alchemists believed that they could transform base metals into gold, but the real transformation they were after was an inner one. They believed that by working with chemicals and lab techniques, they could access deeper levels of the psyche and connect with their own inner transformation.

And this is where synchronicity comes in. Jung believed that alchemy was a form of active imagination, and that the process of alchemy, including the use of chemicals and laboratory techniques, was a way of experiencing synchronicity. The alchemists believed that by working with the materials in their lab, they could tap into a deeper level of reality and experience meaningful coincidences that were not just random occurrences, but were connected to their psyche.

So, synchronicity is not just about the random moments of serendipity in our lives. It’s about understanding that there is a deeper meaning and purpose behind everything that happens to us, and that by tapping into our inner selves, we can access a deeper level of reality and experience true transformation. Alchemical hypnotherapy has an uncanny knack of accelerating synchroncities in our lives and whilst we can’t ‘make’ them happen on demand, they often show up as mini-miracles – and sometimes not so mini!

In short, Synchronicity and alchemy are two sides of the same coin. They both refer to the connection between seemingly unrelated events and the inner transformation that we can experience through them. So next time you have one of those ‘coincidental’ moments, take a moment to reflect on the deeper meaning and purpose behind it. Who knows, it might just be the key to unlocking your own inner alchemist.
